For many years the Caravan used Mummers Plays in school assemblies to spark discussions of medieval studies. Mummers assemblies can be used as outreach to schools and youth programs (scouts, etc.) and children’s Mummers Plays can be organized for public events.
Caravan Mummers Plays can be assembled with any combination of adults and children. The King and Queen of England may be a parent and child. St. George might be played by a young girl who engages in a sword battle with her father as the Evil Knight.
Local officials can be recruited for Dignitaries’ Mummers Plays. Heads of agencies, media people, priests and ministers, sports figures, local merchants, available celebrities; all can be approached and persuaded that this can be fun to do together without loss of dignity, or sacrifice of time (no rehearsals).
Mummers Plays can be created to serve the special needs of an event. They may be used for opening ceremonies and festive processions. They can become signature events for your festival and carry messages unique to your community mission.
These plays can be delivered turn-key, with mummers recruited from the crowd; or, they can be built into larger pageant events using a combination of Caravan resources and community energies.
Mummers’ parts are tacked to wooden paddles for easy reading and no memorizing. The Mummers Rule is, “If you can’t be good, be loud; and being good is not allowed.”
The traditional character of “Old Bet” is typically played by a man with the aspect of a lumber jack.
